Ways You Can Improve your Memory

Ways You Can Improve your Memory

Just can't seem to remember details and those important phrases for school work?Want to learn ways to improve your memory? Here today i will be sharing ways that you can improve your memory.

I, myself don't have the best memory, so i went onto the internet to search for some ways people used to improve their memory. And this, is what i found.

  • Write things down.
In one psychological test involving students watching a lecture on psychology students who did not take notes remembered the same number of points as the students who did take notes.
That is, the mere act of taking notes did not increase the amount of stuff they memorized. Both groups of students remembered around 40% of the information covered in the lecture.
But the students who had taken notes remembered a higher proportion of key facts, while those who did not take notes remembered a more or less random assortment of points covered in the lecture.
In building a link between the spatial part of our brain that we need to use in order to make marks on paper that make sense and the verbal part of our brain that we need to compose meaningful utterances to supply our writing hand with, we strengthen the process by which important information is stored in our memory.
So next time, when you have to remember something really important whether that be for school or daily life, Write it down, you will remember it better.
If you are looking for ways to improve your memory and concentration and also relieve stress, reading will help. The brain-stimulating activities from reading have shown to slow down cognitive decline in old age with people who participated in more mentally stimulating activities over their lifetimes. Source

  • Get enough sleep.
Researchers have tested this process by teaching people new skills and then scanning their brains after a period with or without sleep. When people have a chance to sleep, for example, after practicing a skill similar to piano scales, the centers of the brain that control speed and accuracy are more active than those regions in people who haven't slept. Scientists think that while we sleep, memories and skills are shifted to more efficient and permanent brain regions, making for higher proficiency the next day. In fact, sleeping shortly after learning new information has been shown to help retention. Some research indicates that when people learn before going to sleep (or even before taking a nap), they remember the information better in the long term.

Sleep also helps us synthesize new ideas, not just remember the old ones. While you're sleeping, pieces of knowledge can be pulled together from different experiences and parts of the brain to create novel concepts or "ah ha" moments. That's a big help when you're trying to solve a problem or make an advance in your work.

  • Ask why
There isn't a need for scientific research to back this up. If you don't understand something, there is no way you would remember it. To fully understand a point, ask questions, ask why, that's what the teachers are there for.

  • Teach it to someone

study showed that people’s ability to recall information was significantly increased when told that they had to pass on the knowledge to someone else. Students don’t even need to test someone else to get the benefit; they just have to believe that they are going to.

  • Speak aloud instead of simply reading

This is an effective strategy to improve recall, more so than just repeating the content in your own head. Once you have spent time learning the material, it is helpful to test yourself. This allows you to think deeply about the material, and it also has the added advantage of providing practice for performing under exam pressure.

  • Create Mental Associations
This method takes advantage of an amazing fact about human memory: most people remember images better than verbal or written information. These images are literally mental hooks that allow you to retrieve the information from your long-term memory.

For example, you can draw mindmaps to better help you remember certain topics that might be more difficult to remember.
  • Draw diagrams
This will give your mind a visual representation of data to remember which the brain will remember better. Similar to what we have learnt above this is also a way of creating mental associations.

Drawing diagrams will help you to visualise information which would be hard to describe. This creates a visual memory in your mind which can be recalled in an exam
  • Have regular Study Breaks
Psychologists have found that brief resting periods after learning aids memory. In studies, when people take a little rest after learning, say, a string of numbers, they do better in recall than other people who’ve been given another task straight away. Source

When your brain is working, you need to take regular study breaks to help your brain absorb more information but also to keep you motivated and focused when you are working. Take a short break after 45-50 minutes study as your focus and concentration will become impaired after this period, anything new after 1 hour 30 minutes does not get assimilated.

  • Practice, practice, practice
You have probably heard this before and don't want to hear this but practicing work is the best way to remember how to do a certain type of question. Get sample questions and do them, keep practicing and you would remember it better.

  • Meditate
Meditation is one of the study methods that can help students stay focused when studying. Not only will meditation help you concentrate when studying but it will help reduce pre-exam stress as it improves both mental and physical health.

5 Steps to Being Productive Firstly, What is being Productive? Productivity is often describes a person's capability to do a lot of work, but is can refer to anything that produces a lot. A Productive day would mean to complete more things in a less amount of time but also doing it effectively.   Productivity is the amount of output produced per work hour. In other words, the calculation is: Productivity = output / work hours. Here are some points to remember, Sleep. Sleep more. I know it can be tempting to stay up at night to do whatever do but you would wake up the next day feeling more exhausted. Its hard to be productive while yawning and trying to stay awake.
